Description
Senses Exarcheia 01 is an artwork in a series of six original pieces inspired by the dense and expressive graffiti culture of Exarcheia, the widely recognised rebellious quarter of Athens, Greece. This Exarcheia graffiti inspired artwork takes you on a colour and hidden meaning exploration.
While documenting the Virtual Journey of Athens, the artist walked through Exarcheia and became immersed in its visual intensity and ideological atmosphere. This is a district shaped by free-thinkers, protest movements, and political expression, where walls, shutters, and surfaces are saturated with spray-painted slogans, symbols, and imagery. The sheer abundance of colour and message often overwhelms the viewer, requiring conscious effort to decipher meaning beneath the surface.
This artwork translates that experience into a contemporary conceptual canvas. Loud, basic colours reference the raw immediacy of street graffiti, while layered forms echo the way meaning can become obscured through excess. As with the streets of Exarcheia itself, the viewer is invited to search actively for the message rather than consume it passively.
Senses Exarcheia 01 forms part of the artist’s ongoing Senses series, which explores perception through paired word concepts. In this work, the philosophy of looking versus seeing is embedded visually, challenging the viewer to move beyond first impressions.
Created in the UK, July 2025.
