Some scars don’t disappear. They just get paved over.
In June 2023, I walked 11 kilometres along the former path of the Berlin Wall, from Treptow to Moabit, camera in hand, taking close to a thousand photographs. Not to document what the Wall was, but to ask what the city does with a wound like that. The answer is complicated.
The Wall stood for 28 years. It divided families, neighbourhoods, lives. Since 1989 Berlin has spent more than three decades building over it, developing around it, quietly erasing it. In most places you’d never know it was there. A cobblestone line in the pavement. A gap between buildings. The wrong kind of silence.
This series of 52 images doesn’t try to reconstruct history. It translates a walk. A specific route through a specific city on a specific afternoon. Translate into layered visual collages. The photographs are processed deliberately: reduced, fragmented, pulled apart and reassembled. Not because the camera failed, but because memory works that way. The Berlin Wall doesn’t live in sharp edges. It lives in what’s almost there.
These are not travel photographs. They are not a record of what Berlin looks like. They are an attempt to carry something of what it feels like to walk a city’s buried history, and to ask whether forgetting is the same as healing.
The series
Berlin Wall is a series of 52 works, each a layered photographic collage created from images taken during a single walk along the former Wall’s route in 2023. Each piece stands alone, but together they form a visual journey from Treptow to Moabit — a narrative of erasure, memory, and the strange optimism of a city that chose to keep moving.

About the Virtual Journeys series
Berlin Wall is part of the Virtual Journeys project, a series of urban walks translated into graphic novel pages. The camera collects the city; what happens afterward is reduction, not enhancement. Detail stripped back, colour pushed toward line, photorealism replaced by something closer to memory. Each series follows a specific route through a specific city, assembled into sequential page layouts that move like a story. Because a walk through a city always is one. Not what Berlin looks like. What it feels like to be inside it, and what stays with you after you leave.
