London, the 14 Dragons
The City of London, the Square Mile, is the oldest part of the city, a place so ancient and so distinct that the King of England must ask permission before entering it. Its borders are marked not by walls, which are long gone, but by 14 cast-iron dragons: guardian statues placed at every entry point, their wings raised, their presence a reminder that this ground has always been defended. The Romans were here in the 1st century. The dragons arrived later. Both are still here.
In August 2023, I walked the 10-kilometre perimeter of the City, all 14 dragons, in sequence, with a camera and 1,500 exposures. Not to document the financial district. Not to photograph the landmarks. To walk the boundary of a city inside a city and see what it actually contains: the delivery drivers and the protestors, the florists and the broken things, the rain shelters and the private roads and the soap bubble man by the river.
The dragons mark the edge. Everything inside them is the story.
These 50 pages are that story. Assembled in the graphic novel format of the Virtual Journeys series. The photographs reduced, processed, stripped of photorealism until what remains is closer to the feeling of a walk than the record of one. August in London. The Square Mile. The dragons, watching.
The series
Berlin Wall is a series of 52 works, each a layered photographic collage created from images taken during a single walk along the former Wall’s route in 2023. Each piece stands alone, but together they form a visual journey from Treptow to Moabit — a narrative of erasure, memory, and the strange optimism of a city that chose to keep moving.

About the Virtual Journeys series
The 14 Dragons is part of the Virtual Journeys project, urban walks rendered as graphic novel pages. The camera collects the city. What happens afterward is reduction, not enhancement. Photorealism replaced by something closer to drawing, documentation replaced by feeling. London is the project’s most precisely bounded walk, a perimeter with a beginning, an end, and 14 cast-iron sentinels marking the way. The boundary is fixed. What happens inside it is anything but.
