The gate itself, one of the great entry points into the historic city, built into the Theodosian Walls that have stood since the 5th century. The gate has lost all of its former function. no longer a threshold but still marking the point where outside becomes inside.  The wall on either side has been standing for fifteen hundred years and had stopped its protection.
