Tokyo Shibuya Station is where the Virtual Journeys project began, and where its logic was first understood. The camera was never going to capture what Shibuya felt like. So the photographs were reduced instead: layered, degraded, stripped of detail until what remained was closer to impression than documentation. Closer to the way a place lives in you after you’ve left it. That process, city as graphic novel, walk as sequential narrative, has since taken the project to Berlin, London, Lisbon, Istanbul, and Rome. Tokyo is where the language was invented.
