Rome 7 Hills, from Aventine to Palantine
In 2024, I walked the Rome 7 hills: Aventine, Caelian, Esquiline, Viminal, Quirinal, Capitoline, Palatine. Camera in hand and no fixed agenda except to see what the city was actually doing. Not the Rome of guidebooks and bucket lists. The Rome that exists between the monuments: the guitar player on the corner, the priest walking with particular pride, the couple arguing on the stairs, the helmet someone left and never came back for.
Rome is the most layered city in the world. Beneath every street there is another street. Beneath every era, another era. The seven hills were the city’s original logic, the reason Rome is here at all, and walking them in 2024 is to feel that logic still operating, underneath everything that has been built on top of it.
These 51 collages are not postcards. They are not the Colosseum or the Forum or the things you came to see. They are the city that surrounds those thing. They are the ordinary, the accidental, the human. Rome in the gaps. Rome when it thinks no one is watching. Rome where people live their daily lives.
The series
The Seven Hills is a series of 51 works, each a layered photographic collage built from images made during a walk across Rome’s seven hills in 2024. The series is part of the Virtual Journeys project. A body of work exploring cities not as destinations but as experiences. Not what a place looks like. What it feels like to be inside it. To show that all over the world we are doing the same things.

About the Virtual Journeys series
The Seven Hills is part of the Virtual Journeys project. Urban walks rendered as graphic novel pages. Not photography in any conventional sense: the images are reduced, processed, stripped of the detail the camera captured until what remains is the feeling of the place rather than its appearance. Rome is the most layered city the project has visited. Two thousand years compressed into every street corner, and the format meets it on its own terms. Layer upon layer, page by page. Cities have always been telling stories. Virtual Journeys listens.
All Rome pages, life on seven hills.
