LEARN & KNOW is a Conceptual Art Sculpture from Steit’s ongoing Senses Project, a conceptual series that uses the six primary human senses as both subject and structural principle. Where other works in the series address sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, this piece turns to the sixth sense Steit identifies: learning — and the question of what it means to truly absorb what we are exposed to.
As with its companion works in the series, the piece presents its two words as a single interlocked typographic mass, fabricated through 3D printing and internally lit with LED illumination. The letterforms press into one another, sharing edges and collapsing space, so that learn and know are experienced simultaneously rather than sequentially. The viewer encounters them as one object before they can be read as two distinct ideas.
That distinction is where the work resides. Learning is a process, active, effortful, incomplete. Knowing implies arrival, the consolidation of understanding into something held and carried. By fusing the two into one illuminated form, the work refuses to let either stand alone, and in doing so asks a quietly demanding question: in a world of abundant information and accelerated consumption, how often does the act of learning genuinely become knowledge?
The light, as throughout this series, is not decorative. The diffuse halo extending into the surrounding wall creates an immediate visual claim before the words are fully read, presence before comprehension. The object enacts what it describes: we are exposed before we understand, we encounter before we know.
Consistent with Steit’s broader practice, LEARN & KNOW prioritises idea over spectacle. It does not illustrate its subject so much as embody it. A conversation the artist initiates, and the viewer is invited to complete.
