Senses Lights – Taste & Savour

Description

TASTE & SAVOUR is a conceptual art sculpture from Steit’s ongoing Senses Project, a conceptual series that uses the six primary human senses as both subject and structural principle. Of all the senses the project addresses, taste is perhaps the most intimate. It requires physical contact, proximity, and ingestion. Nothing is tasted at a distance. This piece takes that intimacy as its starting point.

As with the other works in the series, the piece presents its two words as a single interlocked typographic mass, fabricated through 3D printing and internally lit with LED illumination. The letterforms interweave densely, so that taste and savour must be read together before they can be understood apart. The work is encountered as one object, one experience, before the distinction between its two words becomes clear.

That distinction is where the work lives. Tasting is immediate and physiological — the tongue registers what it receives: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, umami. Savouring is something altogether different: a deliberate act of slowing down, of holding an experience and attending to its qualities before letting it pass. Where taste is reflex, savour is choice. By fusing the two into one glowing, inseparable form, the work asks a question that extends well beyond food: how much of what we experience do we ever truly take the time to savour?

The LED illumination, as throughout this series, does not decorate. It activates. The diffuse white halo spreading beyond the letterforms into the surrounding wall draws the viewer toward the work before any reading has taken place, creating an immediate sensory claim. The piece is experienced before it is understood, much as taste itself arrives before reflection can begin.

Consistent with Steit’s broader practice, TASTE & SAVOUR prioritises idea over spectacle. It does not illustrate its subject so much as embody it. a conversation the artist initiates, and the viewer is invited to complete.
