Senses Lights – Smell & Scent

SMELL & SCENT is a conceptual art sculpture from Steit’s ongoing Senses Project, a conceptual series that uses the six primary human senses as both subject and structural principle. Of all the senses the project addresses, smell is perhaps the most elusive and invisible, instantaneous, and uniquely resistant to description. This piece takes that elusiveness as its subject.

As with the other works in the series, the piece presents its two words as a single interlocked typographic mass, fabricated through 3D printing and internally lit with LED illumination. The letterforms press into one another, dense and entangled, so that smell and scent must be disentangled by the viewer before they can be considered separately. The eye works to read what the nose would register in an instant.

That contrast is where the work resides. Smelling is involuntary and immediate. The nose receives what the environment releases, without permission or preparation. Scent is something more considered: a quality attributed, named, remembered, and carried. Perfume has a scent; a room simply smells. By fusing the two into one glowing, inseparable form, the work draws attention to the gap between raw sensory experience and the meaning we layer onto it and asks how much of what we perceive we ever truly stop to name.

The choice of a purely visual medium for a work about the least visual of senses is itself part of the argument. There is no smell here, only the suggestion of one the gap the viewer is left to fill. The diffuse halo of LED light spreading beyond the letterforms into the surrounding wall creates presence before readability, drawing the viewer in before any reading has taken place. The object arrives before it can be understood, much as a scent does.

Consistent with Steit’s broader practice, SMELL & SCENT prioritises idea over spectacle. It does not illustrate its subject so much as embody it. a conversation the artist initiates, and the viewer is invited to complete.
