Sense Graffiti Hopton Hall

Description

This piece forms part of Steit’s Senses graffiti series and belongs to a body of location-based works. Created on-site at the Hopton Hall Estate, the painting features the estate itself in the background—its distinct roofline outlined against a blue sky, with the sweeping green lawn stretching across the foreground.

The phrase Touch&Feel references the origins of the Grell family’s wealth: mining. While they touched the land, they remained far from the hardships of manual labour, extracting without experiencing.

Layered portraits of Oliver Cromwell, Mary Queen of Scots, and Queen Caroline, each of whom stayed at Hopton Hall over its 600-year history, hover within the composition, blending eras and perspectives. Near the bottom we find the modern day logo of the estate that mimics part of the layout of the rose garden.

The use of bold primary and secondary colours, a signature in Steit’s work, reinforces the contrast between surface and depth, privilege and toil, presence and absence.
