I have had an interest in languages and words/meanings for as long as I can remember. From the origin of words to the similarities in languages that evolve. At the art academy I tried many different subjects and techniques combinations. Taking apart TV’s, projecting words on screens, Computer displayed texts, etc.
When I started with the theme of World Communication I explored the most basic of communication methods and came to the 5 senses as our primary input-output system: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch. As I was missing a cognitive element I added knowledge that represents the 6th organ, the brain. This last addition showed me that the 6 words by themselves miss a nuance.
Combining with a cognitive, deeper, meaning brings a tension to the combination. Don’t just hear but also listen, look and see what you are presented, instead of smelling take in the scent, go beyond tasting and savour the taste, do not just touch but feel. And for the cognitive, don’t just learn, but know and understand.
The first artwork featuring these 6 word combinations was a fabric design I used on furniture and as 6 ‘paintings’ of 140x140cm in the primary and secondary colours with the pattern printed ton-sur-ton resulting in a subtle reference to the senses.
