Berlin Wall
Berlin Wall heritage from Treptow to Moabit.
In June 2023, I walked 11 kilometres along the path of the former Berlin Wall, documenting today’s urban landscape through nearly 1,000 photographs. Stretching 155 kilometres, the Berlin Wall once encircled West Berlin, acting as a concrete barrier separating the free West from the Soviet-controlled East. Built in 1961 as part of the Iron Curtain, it symbolised the Cold War divide and lasted until 1989.
Though the wall is gone, its remnants still stand as key historical sites, attracting millions of visitors. These sections serve not only as tourist destinations but also as poignant reminders of Germany’s brutal division—a divide that lasted until reunification on October 3, 1990. Today, the area is undergoing rapid transformation, balancing its painful past with modern urban development. This project captures the intersection of history, memory, and contemporary city life.
