Istanbul Topkapi Gate to Palace
A journey through 2000 years of history
Topkapi is not only the name of an iconic Ottoman palace, but also one of the most historically significant gates to the city of Istanbul. Istanbul Topkapi Gate to Palace. In modern times, the area surrounding this gate is a bustling hub of activity, with buses and trams constantly ferrying people in and out of the historic old centre of Istanbul. In early summer 996, I embarked on a walk that took me from Topkapi Gate to the Topkapi Palace, documenting the 7-kilometre journey through the heart of this ancient city.
Starting at the Topkapi T4 Tramway, the route takes you through key streets such as Turgut Özal Millet Caddesi and Ordu Caddesi, ultimately leading to Yéniçeriler Caddesi and the entrance gate to the Topkapi Palace. Along the way, this walk offers a glimpse into the old city, passing by numerous landmarks and historic buildings that have shaped Istanbul’s rich cultural heritage. Key sights like Sultanahmet Square, the stunning Blue Mosque, and the architectural marvel that is Hagia Sofia are among the highlights you’ll encounter along the journey.
As with the Tokyo series, these photographs were taken in 1996, capturing the essence of Istanbul at the time. Since then, the images have been carefully processed in 2020, offering a unique window into the Istanbul of the recent past. Through this collection, you’ll gain a visual understanding of the city’s historic core, reflecting its timeless beauty, rich traditions, and vibrant life.
